  Multiple Sclerosis Support Group members from Turlock, Modesto, Oakdale and surrounding areas pulled together with pictures and hand-stitched quilt squares with names and dates of MS diagnosis to create a beautiful quilt. The idea came from Karen Basi’s mother Elizabeth VonRotz whom was responsible for chosing the fabric for this first quilt and is pictured in the center of the quilt along with the rest of the Wave of Hope Team. Although she was in poor health, Elizabeth attended the National MS Society Walk in April of 2007 as a member of the Wave of Hope Team. She finished the race out of breath. Asked why she pushed herself, she said: “I have to finish this for my daughter who has MS”. She passed away 16 days later. As a memorial for her creativity and her desire to muster up enough strength to finish the race, each year there will be a hummingbird square in her honor. This first quilt brought to the organization over $2300. Wow! What an accomplishment. 

• Jennifer was not the least bit shy to ask her customers as they walked through her place of business if they would donate to the Wave of Hope team for the National MS Society Modesto Walk held in May 2008. She collected over $300 and displayed “Join The Movement” shoes throughout the lobby to remind people they can make a difference in helping those living with multiple sclerosis. The Wave of Hope team consisted of over 40 walk teammates and raised more than $6500. All money raised during this event went to much needed research and local programs to educate the public of this devastating disease.
