Karen’s Story:
Karen Basi was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), an inflammatory disease of the central nervous system in 2000.
Karen says, “My family and friends have been a huge part of my support system which keeps me energized and thinking positive. They have watched me as I experience the trials and tribulations of dealing with the unpredictability of this disease. The fear of not knowing that one day I might not be able to walk, speak, think or function on a normal basis is a true reality. My HOPE is that someday soon, a cure for MS will heal my body and the more than 400,000 others living with MS.”
Once the diagnosis was made, many issues came forth in her life. What type of treatment if any is right for me? How will this affect my family? What are the long term effects on my health and how long will I remain healthy?
After living through this disease for several years, Karen and her husband, Randy, decided to help others who are afflicted by this debilitating disease. They started a support group, did fundraising through Randy’s local Rotary Club and we able to contribute to the National MS Society to help fund research. After a few years, they decided to start their own non-profit organization locally, to really reach out to their community and do more service. The Wave of Hope officially incorporated in July 2007.
Currently, The Wave of Hope runs a support group for people with MS, they have a scholarship program- where they purchase needed medical equipment for persons in need with MS, participate in the annual Walk MS – Northern California Walk, and support research efforts nationally.
